A deep, rich Mehendi stain is the dream of every bride — and while the quality of the henna and the artist’s technique matter enormously, what you do in the 24 hours after application makes a real difference.
Keep the paste on as long as you comfortably can. Most brides keep it for six to eight hours; many sleep with it on. The longer the paste stays in contact with warm skin, the deeper the dye penetrates.
Once the paste is dry, dab it gently with a mixture of lemon juice and sugar. This keeps the paste moist and stuck to the skin. Do not overdo it — a light touch every hour or so is enough.
Avoid water for at least twelve hours after removing the paste. Scrape the dried paste off with a blunt edge or your fingers instead of washing. Apply a little mustard oil or a natural balm to the design — warmth helps the stain oxidise to its deepest colour over the next two days.
Finally, plan your Mehendi two days before the wedding. The stain reaches its peak colour around 48 hours after application, so your hands will look their very best on the big day.
